| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description First published in 1969, this classic manual of automotive repair equips VW owners with the knowledge to handle every situation they will come across with any air-cooled Volkswagen built through 1978, including Bugs, Karmann Ghias, vans, and campers. With easy-to-understand, fun-to-read information -- for novice and veteran mechanics alike -- anecdotal descriptions, and clear language, this book takes the mystery out of diagnostic, maintenance, and repair procedures, and offers some chuckles along the way. This edition features new information on troubleshooting, new photos, and an updated resource list.

Excellent Manual September 5, 2010 Tom The book is excellent and a must for VW owners. It gave some valuable information regarding a few maintenance items and how to drive the 4 speed transmission.
Good Experience August 8, 2010 des1517 How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive 19 Ed: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot (Paperback)
My book arrived sooner than promised and well packed so the item was in new and pristine condition.
How to keep your VW alive July 21, 2010 peter patriot This book is as detailed as is required for a mechanically inclined amateur to perform a professional rebuild. There are many do's and don'ts and gotcha's explained that would otherwise have to be learned by experience.I also recommend "How to rebuild your Volkswagen air cooled engine" as a companion. With both you cannot go wrong.
A nudge in the right direction July 10, 2010 Jeff R. Hawkins (Boise, ID United States) I owned this book during my formative years, in the 80's, with my first car, a 1973 Superbeetle. As some reviewers have said, this should not be your only repair manual, but then again, I have never seen a repair manual for any car that could stand alone. I've always found that, for instance, having both a Haynes and a Chilton's is often extremely helpful. The steps that one book skips over the other book might cover in detail. THIS book, however, achieves something that no other repair manual does: it teaches you that you can fix your car and keep it happy. It teaches you to think about the problems in a new way. The most difficult repairs involve problems that you can't understand. Sometimes just knowing how something works turns a difficult and expensive repair into a quick, simple, and elegant fix. This book will help a novice achieve a sense of calm, and of competence, when it is most needed. If you did only have a budget for one manual, I'd make it this one. It'll help you fix your car, it'll help you love your car, and as a bonus, it'll give you the tools you need to face the big challenges in your life with a sense of confidence. Thanks, John!
A Classic May 20, 2010 B. Hancock I bought this book around 1980 for my Beetle convertible. Best single thing I ever did. I'm not mechanically inclined at all but this book had me doing a fair amount of repairs myself.
In my opinion the hand drawn pictures is one of the best ideas I've seen for a repair manual. Too often those grainy grey/black pictures in most manuals just leave me confused. If you're not familiar with what you're looking at it's just one big grey mess you're looking at.
His writing style also made everything seem possible and game me the confidence to actually try some repairs. I also just picked up a lot of general knowledge that applies in general to most cars, I really learned a lot from this book, and all of it painless (almost painless anyway).
